How to Tell if Cashmere Is High Quality…and 5 Things to Look For Before You Buy
Cashmere has a reputation for being one of the most luxurious fibers in the world — soft, warm, and beautifully lightweight. But not all cashmere is created equal.
Over the years of sourcing pieces for Marin Cashmere, I’ve handled hundreds of sweaters, and the difference between exceptional cashmere and lower-quality knits becomes very clear once you know what to look for.
If you’re building a thoughtful wardrobe — one centered around pieces that last — here are five ways to recognize high-quality cashmere.
1. Look for Long, Fine Fibers
The quality of cashmere begins with the fiber itself.
High-quality cashmere comes from longer fibers, which create yarn that is smoother, stronger, and less prone to pilling. Shorter fibers tend to break more easily, which leads to the fuzzy surface and pilling that many people associate with cheaper sweaters.
Longer fibers feel silky rather than fuzzy and maintain their softness over time.
2. Check the Density of the Knit
A well-made cashmere sweater should feel substantial but still lightweight.
One simple trick is to hold the sweater up to the light. If the knit appears very loose or overly transparent, it may be made with thinner yarn or lighter construction.
High-quality cashmere typically has a denser knit, which helps the sweater hold its shape and last longer while still feeling incredibly soft.
3. Understand What Causes Pilling
Many people assume pilling always means poor quality, but that isn’t necessarily true. All cashmere pills a little at first. This is normal as the yarn settles during the first few wears.bPilling is often caused by friction, especially in places where the sweater rubs against something — for example:
carrying a shoulder bag or purse
wearing a crossbody bag
rubbing against desk edges or seat belts
Over time, once those loose fibers are removed with a sweater comb or fabric shaver, good cashmere typically stabilizes and pills much less. Cashmere care is important!
4. Test the Fabric’s Recovery
Another simple test is to gently stretch a small section of the sweater and release it.
High-quality cashmere has excellent recovery, meaning the knit will return to its original shape rather than staying stretched out.
This resilience is one of the reasons people treasure great cashmere pieces for so long.
5. Look at the Craftsmanship
Finally, pay attention to the details.
When evaluating a sweater, I often turn it inside out to look closely at the seams and construction. The areas I pay particular attention to include:
shoulder seams
arm seams
neckline finishing
ribbing and edges
High-quality knitwear usually shows careful, consistent construction and clean finishing.
Understanding Different Levels of Cashmere
Not all cashmere sits in the same category, and that’s actually a good thing. Today’s market includes several tiers of cashmere, each serving a different purpose in a wardrobe.
Everyday Cashmere
These are the sweaters many people first experience — brands like J.Crew or department store labels that offer approachable cashmere at accessible prices. These pieces can be wonderful for daily wear and layering.
Some contemporary brands also source beautiful yarn from Italian mills, which means an everyday sweater can still be a very nice quality piece. In fact, many people have favorite sweaters from brands like J.Crew that have lasted for years.
Personally, I’ve always loved a classic V-neck from J.Crew made with Italian yarn — it’s a bit of a chef’s kiss sweater: simple, timeless, and easy to wear season after season.
What often distinguishes higher tiers of knitwear is not just the yarn itself, but the fiber length, knit density, and level of craftsmanship in the construction.
Modern Contemporary Cashmere
Brands in this category focus on design and wearability, often blending quality yarns with modern silhouettes. Labels such as Vince, La Ligne, Chinti and Parker and similar contemporary designers create beautiful knitwear that balances quality with current style.
Heritage Cashmere Houses
At the top of the spectrum are heritage knitwear makers, many based in Italy, Scotland, and the UK, whose expertise goes back generations. Brands such as Malo, Brunello Cucinelli, Escada, Le Tricot Perugia, Loro Piana, N.Peal, and Eric Bompard are known for exceptional yarn sourcing, craftsmanship, and construction.
These sweaters are often made with longer fibers and denser knitting techniques, which helps them maintain their shape and softness for many years.
Why Quality Matters
A well-made cashmere sweater is more than just a seasonal purchase. It’s the kind of piece that becomes part of your wardrobe for a long time — something you reach for year after year.
Many of the sweaters I share through Marin Cashmere come from heritage knitwear houses known for exceptional craftsmanship. If you love timeless pieces designed to last, you can explore the current collection in my Etsy shop.
