How to Store Cashmere Properly (And Prevent Damage)

Cashmere is delicate — but storing it properly is simple.

Most damage doesn’t happen while you’re wearing your sweater. It happens in storage.

Here’s the number one rule and number one mistake people make with storing cashmere. I’ll share how to protect your cashmere and prevent moth damage so your pieces last for years.

1. Always Store Cashmere Clean

This is the most important rule.

Moths are not attracted to wool itself — they’re attracted to oils, sweat, food particles, and body residue left in fibers. Before storing cashmere for the season:

  • Hand wash gently or dry clean

  • Allow it to dry completely

  • Fold neatly before placing in storage

Clean garments dramatically reduce the risk of moth infestation.

2. Fold, Don’t Hang - BIG MISTAKE #1

Hanging heavy sweaters can stretch the cashmere fibers and distort the shoulders over time.

Instead:

  • Fold cashmere neatly

  • Stack loosely

  • Avoid over-compressing

Lightweight cardigans and other lighter weight items can be stored on padded hangers short-term or for a season. And if you need to hang your cashmere short term, please use padded hangers only and make sure your cashmere is situated so the shoulders are even. But folding is safest for long-term storage.

3. Use Cedar (Not Plastic Bags)

Cedar naturally repels moths without chemicals.

Place cedar blocks or sachets in:

  • Drawers

  • Storage bins

  • Closet shelves

Avoid sealing cashmere long-term in plastic bags, which can trap moisture and lead to fiber damage.

Breathable storage is best.

4. Choose a Cool, Dry Location

Store cashmere in:

  • Closets inside the home

  • Cool, dry drawers

  • Sealed bins with cedar

Avoid:

  • Damp basements

  • Hot attics

  • Areas prone to moisture

Humidity encourages moth activity.

5. If You Discover Moth Damage

If you notice small holes:

  • Immediately isolate the garment

  • Freeze it for 48–72 hours to kill larvae

  • Air out and clean the storage area

  • Consider professional repair for small holes

Early intervention prevents further damage.

Cashmere Is Meant to Last

When cared for properly, cashmere can last decades. It softens with wear, develops character, and becomes part of your wardrobe story.

Proper storage isn’t complicated — it’s simply intentional.

Fewer things.

Better things.

Loved for longer.
