The Power 6: The Only Tools You Need to Make Your Cashmere Last for Years
Cashmere is one of the most beautiful natural fibers in the world.
It’s soft. Breathable. Lightweight. Durable — when treated well.
But here’s what I’ve learned after years of sourcing, restoring, and reselling hundreds of cashmere pieces:
Cashmere doesn’t need a complicated routine.
It needs consistency.
These are the six tools I use on nearly every piece that passes through Marin Cashmere — and on my own well-loved sweaters at home.
I call them The Power 6.
1. A Gentle Wool Wash
Cashmere doesn’t need to be dry cleaned every time.
In fact, over-cleaning can weaken fibers.
A gentle wool wash preserves softness and removes natural body oils without stripping the fabric.
Wash by hand or on delicate. Cool water. Lay flat to dry.
Simple.
2. A Steamer
Steam is one of the most underrated tools in knitwear care.
It:
• Relaxes fibers
• Removes light odors
• Smooths wrinkles
• Refreshes between wears
I steam almost every sweater before photographing and listing it. I also have a small travel steamer that doubles down on my other travel clothes and a larger floor steamer at home which also doubles down on clothing and linens.
Steam brings tired knits back to life.
3. A Fabric Comb or Depiller
Pilling is normal.
Let me say that again: pilling is normal.
It doesn’t mean poor quality. It means friction.
A good depiller or cashmere comb gently removes pills without shaving down the fiber too aggressively.
Used lightly and occasionally, it extends a sweater’s life dramatically.
4. Cedar (and Sometimes Lavender)
Cedar blocks or rings naturally deter moths.
No chemicals. No synthetic scent.
I store every off-season piece with cedar — and sometimes a lavender sachet for freshness.
Luxury should feel natural.
5. Padded Hangers (For the Right Pieces)
Heavy sweaters should be folded.
But lightweight cardigans and delicate knits? Padded hangers prevent shoulder bumps and stretching.
It’s a small upgrade that protects shape.
6. Proper Storage
Clean before storing.
Fold, don’t hang heavy knits.
Use breathable bags or bins.
Keep out of damp areas.
Most sweater damage happens in storage — not wear.
Storage is preservation.
Why This Matters
Sustainability isn’t just about buying secondhand.
It’s about taking care of what you already own.
When you extend the life of a single cashmere sweater by even two or three years, you dramatically reduce its environmental footprint.
That’s real impact.
And it’s quieter than people expect.
Buy Better. Wear Longer.
I built Marin Cashmere around the idea that beautiful things deserve longer lives.
The Power 6 isn’t complicated.
It’s not expensive.
It’s just intentional.
Because luxury isn’t about constantly replacing.
It’s about caring.
