The 5-Piece Fall Cashmere Capsule
In Marin, fall rarely arrives all at once. Mornings are cool, afternoons can still feel like summer, and by dinner I’m reaching for another layer. These days, that kind of slow transition into fall feels familiar in so many places—the calendar says September, but the weather hasn’t completely caught up.
It’s exactly the kind of season cashmere was made for.
I’m very choosy about what I add to my wardrobe each season. I look for beautiful, versatile pieces that feel wonderful, work hard and make getting dressed easy. These are the five pieces I reach for—and look for—every fall.
1. The Classic Crewneck or V-Neck
A classic crewneck or V-neck in a neutral such as beige or cream is the foundation of a fall wardrobe. I love wearing mine over a crisp white or striped button-down—or layered over a striped Breton tee for an easy, classic look. It works with almost everything and never feels dated.
2. The Easy, Lightweight Cardigan
A lightweight cardigan is perfect for fall’s unpredictable temperatures. Look for one that works buttoned as a sweater and open as a light jacket. It’s easy to slip over a tee or button-down—and it’s the piece you’ll be glad you brought when the temperature drops.
3. The Cashmere Tee
A cashmere tee in a fall color such as gray, taupe or navy is one of my favorite transitional pieces. It’s light enough for warmer afternoons but easy to layer beneath a jean jacket or cardigan when the temperature drops. Add a vintage silk scarf for a pop of color and a little personality.
4. The Sweater With Personality
Not everything in a capsule needs to be neutral. Add one sweater in a color you love, a stripe, a Fair Isle pattern or an unexpected detail. This is the piece that makes your fall wardrobe feel like you.
5. The Cashmere-Silk Scarf
A cashmere-silk blend scarf is lighter and more transitional than a traditional cashmere wrap—perfect for early fall, travel and cool evenings. It adds softness, color and polish without too much warmth. Wear it around your neck, drape it loosely over your shoulders or use it to bring new life to a simple sweater.
Buy Better—and Wear It Longer
You don’t need all five pieces at once. Start with the one that fills a genuine gap, then build slowly around colors and silhouettes that work together.
Preloved cashmere makes it possible to find exceptional quality without paying full retail—and gives a beautiful piece another season, another wardrobe and another life.
Once you find the right pieces, thoughtful care will keep them beautiful for years. Fold rather than hang, refresh between washes and remove pills gently as they appear.
Five pieces. Countless combinations. A fall wardrobe built to be worn, loved and kept.
